Good Beer Guide to South West Germany Breweries, Pubs and Beer Styles By Steve Heathman |
Index of the most outstanding beers and pubs in this guide. These are the ones worth making a detour for. |
|
This guide covers the German regions of Baden Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland and Hessen and includes descriptions of the breweries, pubs and beer styles available with tasting notes. Major cities in the area include Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Mainz, Fulda, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Saarbrücken and Heidelberg. This is not an area covered by existing German real ale guides as these are mostly concentrated around Bavaria from Munich to Bamberg, which is not surprising due to the number of independent breweries which still exist there. Beer consumption in Germany has fallen from 151 litres a head in 1976 to only 102 litres in 2018 according to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and about 25 breweries have closed in each of the last 5 years. Fortunately some traditional breweries do still exist and new micro-breweries have sprung up with great success. To find your way around this guide use the mouse sensitive maps and index above to explore the various regions and you will discover a few hidden gems. Prost !. A complete list of all functioning breweries in these regions although not necessarily covered by this guide can be found here for: Baden Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland and Hessen. |
